Oh Ship!

Look at what I found for Collin's room!  What little boy wouldn't want a cool ship like this in his room?! It goes perfectly with what I'm scheming for his room.  No, not a nautical theme.  More of an eclectic mix of modern with some vintage pieces.

GoodWill Price tag: $30 + 1/2 off day = $15!

Potato Block Print Pin Board DIY

I promised I would show you what I did with my Potato block print fabric.  I covered an average cork board to make a fun inspiration board for our office.  I am really happy with the results.  Another house project crossed off the list! I'm on a roll. Let's hope seeing the pinned inspiration on my new board will keep the motivation coming!

I added a brass tack in each corner to finish it off.  This was such an easy project and I have to say carving out potatoes is really cathartic.

Here are a few tips if you are going to try this yourself

1.  Use linen or polyester because the ink bleeds on cotton.
2.  Do not wash fabric prior.  Most new fabrics have a film and in this case that film helps the stamp apply clearly with sharper edges.
3.  Soak the dye in a house hold sponge using it as your stamp pad.
4. Do not soak the potato in the sponge, a little dye goes a long way.
5.  Let the potato dry out for a few hours before stamping. The juice's from the potato will dilute and smear.

Potato Block Printing DIY

Kelly Weastler : Sea Urchin

This is how it all started.  I saw this Kelly Weastler fabric and fell in love.  It is the perfect balance of masculine/modern.  It almost acts like a neutral behind other prints.  Anyways... I loved it, but not for $100/ yard.  I don't know how my mind went from Kelly Weastler fabric to....

Let me explain.  I love block print fabrics and the above fabric reminded me of a block print.  I decided to try to make my own stamp out of a potato mimicking the sea urchin design.  This is what I came up with after ruining 3 potatoes.

Now I was getting somewhere. I picked up some RIT fabric dye and 1 yard of white linen for 6 bucks.

I started stamping...

And stamping....

Make sure to stop by Monday to see what I did with my potato fabric.  I am giddy with the turnout!

Scale

Design elements are crucial to good design. Some of the front runners are color, texture, lines, balance, contrast and movement.  My personal favorite element is Scale.  Scale can transform a space from completely safe to eye catching and bold.  The above picture is a bedroom designed by Tom Scheere.  He used scale as a bold element making the bed frame over sized as well as the botanical painting.  Think about the painting being a normal 8" by 10" and the bed frame, a scaled down head board. The impact would not be nearly the same. You can see other spaces of his where he plays with scale here. These next photos are also rooms that have used scale to create a focal point.

Classically Modern & A Winner!

Pinned Image
via

Classic(adj.): Of the highest quality. Serving as a standard, model or guide.
Modern (adj.): Simplification, clean, contemporary form.

I am a classic girl by heart. I love Audry Hepburn, tweed, stripes, orchids, To Kill A Mockingbird and pencil skirts. Over the years a bit of Modernism has seeped into my blood appreciating metals, bold patterns and uncluttered spaces. Through design blogs, magazines, pinterest and trial and error, I have been able to hone in on my personal design style. Even thought I appreciate many other styles of design I go back to a classically modern feel.  It's what feels right to me.  Here are some amazing spaces that fit the bill for Classically Modern design.

Coffee Table Styling

The inspiration for this post hit me between the eyes. I was watching T.V. the other night with my feet up on my bare coffee table/trunk.  I started to get annoyed at how bare it was. Then I thought, "Why haven't I EVER had anything on my coffee table?"  I decided to go shopping...in my home.  You can't beat free. This is what I came up with.

Step 1: Blank Slate

Step 2: Add Art Books

Step 3: Add Greenery

Step 4: Add Bone Vase

Step 5: Add Bone Inlayed Box for T.V. Remote

Step 6: Add Glass Hurricane with Candle

Viola!

To be realistic, I will only keep the books, magnolia leaves and hurricane so we will actually have a place to put our feet and ice cream bowls ;)

Woven Wall Baskets

via

I have been appreciating decorative wall baskets lately.  They are an interesting design element that adds warmth, texture, culture, and loads of interest to any space.  I like how the design in each is like a snowflake...no two are alike.

Pantry Gets a New Look

I promised I would share my Pantry organization mission with you, so here is the before picture again in case you forgot how horrible it was.

Big sigh here! I come down stairs now and get excited to open my pantry.  Silly I know, but it is the small things in life ladies!

I even have room to spare.  I decided to go with a basket system.  Each basket has a specific need.

Smaller Baskets:
1. Pasta items
2. All box items i.e. mac n cheese, rice mixes ect.
3. Every day items. Our oats, nuts, raisins, coffee
4. Snacks. Chips, bars, Graham crackers ect. If the basket is full we can't buy any extra snacks. This will be good for our waist line.

Big Baskets:
1. Paper products. Foil, parchment, napkins, plastic cups, paper plates and straws
2. Tupperware
3. Baking supplies and ingredients

Linking up to:

Cottage & Vine

Now everything has a home and I am happy!!

My Ugly Secret

I'm embarrassed to even share this picture of my pantry with you.  It has never looked this bad, but after the Holiday cooking craze, it is anything but organized.  My poor husband couldn't even find his oatmeal this morning.  As I was staring at this mess, I decided I need to fix this once and for all. You see, it seems like every year it gets to this point. Reason: No organization.  That is about to change my friends.  I will reveal the new and improved pantry situation on Monday.  Oh, and sorry to leave you with this image for the whole weekend.

On My Mind

Pinned Image

My mind has been all over the place lately.  Thoughts of a nursery, the launch of Stella & Dot's Spring line, projects going on around the house and restoring a few pieces of furniture....yeesh!  My mind needs to get organized. If I don't stop to write down inspiration and ideas it is gone in a blink.  Here are a few images that are inspiring me.
